As I understand it, self-control is when you control your emotional urges, when you control the first instinctual response and step in with your conscious mind between the sensual input and automatic response.

You exercise your self-control when you don’t scream at your children after the long and hard day at work when they are noisy or rude. Or when you don’t fight back when your spouse attacked you after they had a rough day at work.

Self-discipline is a self-control exercised over a long period of time. You not only tame your negative outbursts, but you can make yourself to work on tedious task for a long period of time. Given enough months self-discipline may become a habit, for example, you always wake up an hour earlier to pray, exercise and be at the office on time.

Answer:

Before going into where/when it is important to show self-control and self-discipline, it’s better to understand the two concepts first.

Controlling your emotional urges is self-control. It’s your first instinctual response that you control. On doing this your conscious mind steps between the sensual input and the automatic response.

Examples: You show self-control when you don’t scream at your family members after the hard day at work when they are noisy.

Another instance, when you refrain from arguing with your spouse after he/she had a rough day at work that is self-control too.

When self-control is exercised over a long period of time, it is described as self-discipline. In this manner, you not only tame your negative outbursts but you also master working on tedious tasks for a long time. Practising self-discipline for many months may become a habit.

Examples: Waking up an hour earlier to pray or exercise or be at work on time.
