Catalysis is the process of increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by adding a substance known as a catalyst (/ˈkætəlɪst/). Catalysts are not consumed in the catalyzed reaction but can act repeatedly. Often only very small amounts of catalyst are required.

Desorption is a phenomenon whereby a substance is released from or through a surface. The process is the opposite of sorption. This occurs in a system being in the state of sorption equilibrium between bulk phase and an adsorbing surface.
