Q1. Smith and Carlos were Afro-Americans while Norman was a White Australian. So ethnically, Smith, Carlos were different from Norman
But Smith, Carlos and Norman were all athletes who fought against a common cause ie racial discrimination. So by profession and ideology, they belonged to the same group

Q2. In Northern Ireland, a Christian dominated country, there were two social groups ie Catholics and Protestants
Here, class and religion overlap because the Catholics were poorer and more vulnerable to discrimination while the Protestant were comparatively rich.

Answer:

(i) Similarity between Tommie Smith and John Carlos : Both Tommie Smith and John Carlos were African-Americans. They both were Blacks and were facing racial discrimination in the United States.

(ii) Similarity between Tommie Smith, John Carlos and Peter Norman : Peter Norman, an Australian and both Tommie Smith and John Carlos belonged to different nations but still they all were one, i.e., they all were athletes.

(iii) United on racial discrimination : All the three athletes were united on the issue of racial discrimination though one of them belonged to white class.

Class and religion overlap with each other when conflict prevails upon people belonging to the same religion but different classes or economic status in society. On taking the example of Northern Ireland where the population is divided into two major sects of Christianity is the roman Catholics and protestants.
