Q.The diagram shows a piece of equipment that can be used to investigate the effect of heat on a metal.
The ball will pass through the ring when it is cold.
When theball is heated it will no longer pass through the ring.Answer the following questions about this investigation

.(i)Explain why the ball does not pass through the ring when it is heated.
( ii ) How would you get the ball to fit through again?
( iii ) What does this investigation tell us about the effect of heat on metals?

1) If the ball is heated, it will expand and not be able to be pass through the ring. this is because, When heat is added to a substance, the molecules and atoms vibrate faster. As atoms vibrate faster, the space between atoms increases. The motion and spacing of the particles determines the state of matter of the substance. ... Solids, liquids and gases all expand when heat is added.

2) By increasing pressure or lowering temperature we can get ball of normal volume again.

increasing pressure leads to decrease intermolecular space and lowering temperature leads to decrease in kinetic energy .

3) By this experiment we can conclude that

Most materials when heated will expand (water being one exception when its temperature is close to zero degrees celcius). If various metals are heated in a bunsen flame then they will expand. Conversely if they are cooled they will contract. If a metal plate containing a hole is heated then the whole plate will expand including the hole. Imagine a circle drawn on the plate with no hole.
