If the school has 1420 pupils, then the number of boys is 852

Solution:

Given, three-fourth of the number of girls in a school is equal to half of the number of boys.

The school has 1420 pupils

We have to find how many of them are boys

Let, the number of boys be “x”

Then, number of girls becomes 1420 – x.

Now according to given information

\frac{3}{4} \times \text { number of girls }=\frac{1}{2} \times \text { number of boys. }

\frac{3}{4} \times(1420-x)=\frac{1}{2} \times x

On simplification we get,

3 \times(1420-x)=4 \times \frac{1}{2} \times x

\begin{array}{l}{4260-3 x=2 x} \\\\ {2 x+3 x=4260} \\\\ {x=\frac{4260}{5}=852}\end{array}

Hence, number of boys in school are 852.
