\implies If a metal is reactive, its surface is attack slowly by air, water (moisture) and moist air. Chemical reaction takes place between the metal and moist air as a result of which the metals get tarnished. This is known as Corrosion. OR. The formation of layers of undesirable compounds on the surface of metals due to exposure to oxygen and moisture is called Corrosion. Gradually, the chemical reaction begins taking place underneath the surface, eating away the hole metal. Iron gets tarnished in this way. Tarnishing of copper and silver are surface phenomenan and does not eat the metal from inside.

  • Applying grease or oil: If a layer of grease or oil is applied on the surface of a metal, it does not come in contact with moist air. This prevents corrosion of metal as presence of air (oxygen) and water is an essential condition for corrosion to take place.
  • Painting: Of a coating of paint is applied on the metal surface, it prevents corrosion as the metal does not come in contact with air (oxygen) and water.
  • Galvanization: This is the process by which a layer of zinc is deposited on the surface of an iron object to prevent corrosion. For this, the iron object is dipped in molten zinc.
  • Alloying: Corrosion of some metals can be prevented by allowing them with other metals. For example, iron rusts easily but when it is alloyed with nickel, chromium, and carbon, it forms stainless steel which is resistant to corrosion.
  • Electroplating: Corrosion of certain metals can be prevented by depositing a protective layer of another metal on them by electroplating. For example, a layer of chromium metal is deposited on steel used for making vehicles. Cans used for packing preserved food stuffs flight juices are made of steel coated with tin.
