Sub nationalism means the idea of asserting the interest of one's own state/region/province, as separate from the interest of the nation and the common interest of all other states/regions/provinces.

Is it a threat to democracy? It is not a threat to democracy but surely a threat to idea of nationhood because sub-nationalism becomes self-perpetuating if it is not nipped in the bud. Let’s see how.

Partition of India was frightening case of sub-nationalism . It was raised by few secular Muslim elite attached to the Aligarh Muslim University. This gang of rich Muslims like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Maulana Mohammad Ali, Sir Muhammad Iqbal and many others were not willing to share the political power in an independent India with the likes of Nehru and Patel. Creation of states on linguistic basis also proved to be conducive to the creation of sub-nationalistic trends. The anti-Hindi movement of Tamilnadu might have had its origin in so called forced imposition of Hindi upon Tamilians, but, its success became a beacon-light to some political leaders of Maharashtra, Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, etc. who openly challenged the Constitution of India with intent to incite regional sentiments though i believe language is not knowledge, it is just a way to communicate.

In India, nationalism has always been undermined by what could be called the sub-nationalism of regionalism and caste. It is often said that what is called India is inhibited by citizens who first call themselves Bengali, or Punjabi, or Tamil, or Gujarati, or whatever, and add Indian only as an afterthought of identity.Within the sub-nationalism of regionalism is the further sub-nationalism of caste. The system of job reservations, particularly after Mandalisation, has brought caste identity to the forefront, challenging the idea of national unity.

Sub nationalism can be both a blessing and a bane. A blessing in that it made for greater political and economic cohesion, and a bane in that it can led to separatism like Catalonia and Kashmir.
