⚫️The energy of the electron in a hydrogen atom has a negative sign for all possible orbits.

#WHAT DOES THE NEGATIVE ELECTRON ENERGY FOR HYDROGEN ATOM MEAN?

➡ The negative symbol signifies attraction. It can also be considered as the energy that you have to provide to release the charge from the clutches of the other charges, in this case, the nucleus. The potential of the electron at infinity is zero. This is the very reason for bringing a charge from infinity ,to measure its potential(i.e.)at infinity the charge will be free from the clutches of other charges (infinity is a little bit of exaggeration).

➡ This negative sign means that the energy of the electron in the atom is lower than energy of a free electron at rest. A free electron at rest is an electron that is infinitely far away from the nucleus and is assigned the energy value of zero. Mathematically, this corresponds to setting n equal to infinity in the equation so that E infinity= 0. As the electron gets closer to the nucleus (as n decreases), E n becomes larger in absolute value and more and more negative. The most negative energy value is given by n=1 which corresponds to the most stable orbital. And We call this the Ground State.

Answer:  The energy of an electron in all orbits of an atom has a negative sign. This negative sign signifies that the  energy of electron is lower than the energy of a free electron at infinity.

The highest value is given by  n = 1 , corresponding to the most stable orbit.
