Atomic Number: The total number of protons present within the nucleus of an atom is known as atomic as atomic number.

Example: Sodium atom has 11 protons in its nucleus, therefore, it's atomic number is 11

Atomic number = Number of positive charges on nucleus = Number of protons in nucleus = Number of electrons in neutral atom.

The number of protons present in the nucleus of the atom is called atomic number(Z)..
