An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault when the stress on the edge overcomes the friction there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earths crust andcause the shaking that we feel and in california there are two plates the pacific plate and the north american plate. Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault and this sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake when two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other they stick a little and when the rocks break the earthquake occurs.

Answer:

Earthquakes occur when the ground is subjected to so much force that it fractures or breaks. Scientists can explain how most earthquakes are caused using simplified theories of the Earth's structure.
