your answer

Using the conservation of angular momentum if the earth is shrunk it keeping the mass constant it would increase it speed and the duration of day will decrease

■ Situation 1: reduction of radius without the preservation of mass

So answering simply,

● if the radius of the Earth just halved without the preservation of mass, then a few things are going to happen… and no one is going to be happy about it.

●The length of the days will remain the same… for a while. The warmth and brightness of the days will become dimmer and dimmer over time. The planet would eventually either drift off into deep space, collide into another planet, burn up in/near the sun, or be hurled off somewhere.

The reasoning here is because the mass of the planet has been greatly reduced, the orbit of the planet is now affected and it will shift into a different orbit or be flung due to gravitational interactions.

■ Situation 2: reduction of radius with the preservation of mass

So,

●the planet reduces in size and mass is preserved. So good news, the planet’s orbit won’t change. But yes, the planet’s rate of rotation would change by increasing.

●The example of an ice skater pulling in their arms is apt. There will also be some other changes as well… for instance, gravitational effects at the “surface” of the planet will be stronger.

●The planet’s weather systems may also become more unstable and the amount and quality of the atmosphere might change.
