Beryllium hydroxide[Be(OH)2 ] is known to be amphoteric in nature, thereby reacting with an acid as well a base.

However, magnesium hydroxide [ Mg(OH)2 ] is a basic compound and so it does not dissolve in another base which is Sodium hydroxide( NaOH).

Therefore, Beryllium hydroxide reacts with Sodium hydroxide( NaOH- a base) , forms bonds with it and dissolves in it, producing a colourless solution of Sodium tetrahydroxoberyllate but Magnesium hydroxide does not dissolve in it.
