Because carbon posses two important properties
catenation-self linking property to have C-C bonds
tetravalency-it has valency of 4.It combines with other elements to attain stability

carbon unique is its ability in forming covalent bonds which are very strong in nature. The small size of the carbon atom makes thecompounds of Carbon exceptionally stable. Hence carbon as an elementhas the ability to form a variety of stable compounds, which can exist freely in nature.
