Because there were some demerits like

1 Position of isotopes acc to at mass it should have different places but acc to at no. No separate places are needed because they have same at no.

2 here were some anamolus pairs elements with different properties were kept together

3 elements with same properties were kept apart

4 position of hydrogen

5 some have greater at. Mass but were still kept predecing the elements with smaller at mass

These were some demerits due to which the system shifted to at no. From at mass

The basic of classification of elements changed from the atomic mass to atomic number due to

⏺️The properties of elements depend upon the number of electrons present in the valence shell which are related to atomic number.

⏺️Thus, the properties of different elements can be compared if we know Their atomic numbers.

⏺️On the other hand, atomic mass can in no way determine the chemical proper- ties of elements, because it doesn't vary regularly with gradation in the chemical properties of elements.
