Q. Write the number of periods and groups in the modern periodic table .Mention the criteria of placing elements in the (I) same group and (i) same period. Illustrate your answer with an example for each case.

Elements are listed in order of increasing atomic number and organized into columns called groups or families. Elements in the same group share very similar chemical properties. There are seven rows, or periods, which include the two rows found on the island below the table.
ELEMENTS ARE PLACED IN SAME :
1) GROUP BECAUSE THEY HAVE SAME VALENCE ELECTRONS AND VALENCY..
EX: HYDROGEN AND LITHIUM HAVE SAME VALENCE ELECTRONS THAT IS 1 AND SAME VALENCY THAT IS +1.
2) PERIOD BECAUSE THEY HAVE EQUAL NO. OF SHELLS..
EX: LITHIUM AND BERELIUM HAVE SAME NO. OF  SHELL THAT IS 2
