x-3 is in “absolute value” brackets, |x-3|. That means both y=x-3 and y=3-x are true.

So, for each value of x, there are two values for y, one is 3 units less than x and the other is 3 units more than x.

Therefore, y has two ranges, both of which are the same length as the range of x (whatever that range may be),

with the values of one range of y staying 3 units under the corresponding values of x,

and with the values of the other range of y staying 3 units over the corresponding values of x.
