On Gortsby's return trip past the park bench, he saw the older gentleman looking for something: As Gortsby walks back, he passes the bench where he had been sitting. He notices the old man who had also been sitting there earlier.
The lesson is that the human heart desires to trust unconditionally. It is in human nature to give one's heart away. Even though Gortsby prides himself on understanding the defeated ways of mankind, he too fell for the con artist. He was all too ready to pour out his sympathy with nothing to gain in return.
Gortsby linked the young stranger's story and the bar of soap together and concluded that the soap had fallen out of the youth's overcoat pocket when he had flung himself down on the bench.
