They don't have the mechanism to convert light energy to chemical energy as they don't have chlorophyll.

So, animals can not prepare their food from carbon dioxide, water and sunlight. Chloroplast is an organelle which is specifically present in green plants. It has a green coloured pigment called chlorophyll. This chlorophyll traps the sunlight and enables plants to make food, which animals can not.Photosynthesis is a useless ability without some way of exposing yourself to as much of the Sun's energy as possible. That requires a large surface area, relative to their volume. “Animals need a lot of energy, and moving at all doesn't really jive well with photosynthesis,” says Agapakis.
