when a large amount of current flows in the circuit or when the load is too large it causes over loading...
and when there is over loading, the fuse gets overheated and thus melts preventing the flow of current in the circuit..
hope helps

high voltage supply causes overloading and short circuiting
a fuse works on heating effect of electric current
when high amount of current flows the fuse wire melts and breaks the circuit
