Q1. If the mean of 16,14,x,23,20 is 18,find the value of x
Q2. If the mean of x, x+2,x+4,x+6,x+8 is 24, find x

And if there are 2 "x" in Q1 what will be the answer

1. mean= sum of observation / total no. of observation
18=16+14+x+23+20/5
90=73+x
so x=17
2.mean = sum of observation \ total no of observation
24=x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8/5
=> 120= 5x +20
=> 100=5x
so x=20

Q.1 sum of 5 numbers = 18 × 5 = 90

but sum = 16+ 14 + 23 + 20 + x

so

90 = 16 + 14 + 23 + 20 + x

90 = 73 + x

x = 90 - 73

= 17

Q.2

sum of 5 numbers = 24 × 5 = 120

but sum = x + x + 2 + x+ 4 +x + 6 +x+8

= 5x + 20

so

120 = 5x + 20

5x = 120 - 20

x = 20
