by rationalising 1/3+2√2 ( 3-2 √2 ) / ( 3-2√2 )

= 3-2√2 / 9-8

= 3-2√2

Now, X +1/X = 3+2√2 + (3-2√2)

= 3+2√2 + 3-2√2

= 6

6 can be written as 6/7 so, X+1/X in a rational number.

because it can be written in the form P/Q where p and q are integer and q ≠ 0.
