To put it simply, because they were.

My grandfather would tell me stories of how before they came, no man was considered poor, as everyone had a role in society. They would sell diamonds and other precious gems on the streets as if they were novelties. There was prosperity and harmony among people of all religions. No one was referred to as a Muslim or a Hindu, you were recognised by the name of your hometown rather than by religion. The British were essentially a grenade in an otherwise calm river that caused a riptide that lasted for centuries. The only thing we got from them was the English language and quite frankly, I would rather have the trillions they took from us back.

The thing that really annoys me is the fact that the queen of England still wears the Kohinoor Diamond on her head. A constant reminder that a landmark of a country that hailed some of the greatest monarchs in history, now sits on the head of one of the most unsubstantial ones.

Pathetic.
