Answer:

1. Monarchy and Democracy.

2. Raja is a royal title used for Indian monarchs. The title is equivalent to king or princely ruler in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

Choosing rulers in 'janapadas'—Men were chosen 'rajas' by performing big sacrifices. The 'ashvamedha' (horse sacrifice) was one such ritual which was used to identify a 'raja'. The 'raja' chosen by this sacrifice was considered very powerful.

3. Some men now became recognised as rajas by performing very big sacrifices. The ashvamedha or horse sacrifice was one such ritual. A horse was let loose to wander freely and it was guarded by the raja's men. If the horse wandered into the kingdoms of other rajas and they stopped it, they had to fight.

4. Varna system is the social stratification based on the Varna, caste. Four basic categories are defined under this system - Brahmins (priests, teachers, intellectuals), Kshatriyas (warriors, kings, administrators), Vaishyas (agriculturalists, traders, farmers ) and Shudras (workers, labourers, artisans).
