Q1.One student says that water exerts pressure on the bottom of the bucket

but another student says that water exerts pressure on the sides of the bucket.

What would you like to say?

Q2.Two tiny holes are made in a plastic bucket, one near the middle part and

other just above the bottom. When the bucket is filled with water, the water

rushes out from the bottom hole much faster than from the upper hole. What

conclusion do you draw from these observations?Q3. Why do deep sea divers have to wear specially designed suits?

Q4. Does pressure exerted by a liquid increases or decreases with depth?

Explain with the help of an activity.

Q5. Observe the vessels A, B, C and D shown in Fig.11.10 carefully.

Volume of water taken in each vessel is as shown. Arrange them in the order

of decreasing pressure at the base of each vessel. Justify your

arrangement ?

Answer 1 :

→ The first one said that water exerts pressure on the bottom of the bucket and the second one said water exerts pressure on the sides of the bucket. From the properties of liquid pressure we can conclude that Liquid exerts (an equal) pressure on all the walls of the container.

Hence,both the students are wrong.

Answer 2 :

→ The emerging water goes out farther from the lower hole; this is because the pressure of water increase with an increase in the depth of the hole. Hence, the water pressure,at a point, increases with the height of water column above it.

Answer 3 :

→ From the property of Liquid Pressure, The Liquid Pressure increases with the increasing depth inside the liquid. Divers wear specially designed suit because deep down sea they have to withstand an enormous pressure which is enough to crash the body of the diver.

Answer 4 :

→ Yes,The pressure exerted by a liquid increases or decreases with depth. An activity to prove that :

Take a tin can, some coloured water,a sharp pin/nail and some cellotape. Make holed with the pin/nail at 4 different points, along a vertical line in the can. These holes should be equidistant. Cover the holes with cellotape. Place the can on a stool and fill it with coloured water. Now,remove the tapes from the hole and observe the streams of water coming out of these holes. We'll observe that the stream, from the lower holes travel a larger distance, this is because the pressure exerted by a liquid increases with depth.

It is for this reason that submarines are always built with a very thick and heavy metals. They have to withstand an enormous water pressure when they go deep down, near to ocean floors.

Answer 5 :

→ The correct sequence will be D, B, A, C.

From the property of liquid pressure we can conclude that it depends upon the height of the liquid column and exerts pressure perpendicular to the bottom of the container, this pressure doesn't depend upon the area of the bottom.
