Q1. Read the extract and answer the questions given below.
The Horses in the Nile
Para
Ibn Batuta travelled to West Africa where, amongst many other
amazing sights, he encountered animals he had never seen before
The river he calls the Nile is not the river of that name in Egypt,
but is actually the River Niger in Africa.
Paraa
I was accompanied by a merchant named Abu Bakr bin Ya'qub. I
rode a cainel, for horses are very dear. We came to a big channel
which runs from the Nile and can be crossed only in boats. The
place abounds in mosquitoes and no one passes it except by night.
We reached the channel in the first third of the night, which was
moonlit.
para3
When we reached the channel I saw on the bank sixteen beasts with
huge bodies. I wondered at them and supposed they were elephants,
which are numerous there. Then I saw they had gone into the river.
I said to Abu Bakr bin Ya'qub, 'What are these beasts?'
He said, 'They are hippopotannuses which have come out to graze on
land.'
Para 4
They are bigger than horses, they have manes and tails, their heads
are like horses' heads, and their feet are like clephants' feet. I saw
them another time when I was sailing on the Nile froin Tunbuktu
(imbuktu) to Kawkaw. They swim in the river and lift their heads
and blow. The boatmen were afraid of them and drew near to land to
avoid being drowned by them.
Para 5 The people have an ingenious trick for hunting them. They have
spears pierced with holes through which they put strong cords. They
strike the hippopotamuses with the spears and, if the blow strikes the
foot or the neck, it pierces right through and they pull on the rope
i till the hippopotamus comes to the bank when they kill it and cat the
flesh. There are many bones lying on the bank.
