Q1. Read the following passage : (7)

Most scientists feel that a world population of between one and two billion can

live on the Earth in a sustainable manner with a reasonable standard of living. As

it stands, the world population is at least three times that of the recommended

level. Combined with what is a reasonable standard of living, everyone would

have an acceptable job, sufficient housing, a varied diet without fear of food and

water shortages, adequate health care, education. Obviously, most people do not

enjoy this standard of living. If the six billion people presently populating the

earth cannot attain such a standard of living and the population swells between

eight and ten billion, how can they attain such a standard of living with the scarce

resources available? But a point to consider is that with more people comes more

human capital. With more human capital, there is a likelihood that we will

discover a technological solution to the overpopulation problem. Scientists

compare population growth to the growth of a cancerous tumour. Both are

characterised by rapid, uncontrolled growth, invasion and destruction of adjacent

areas and the loss of differentiation between individual components. Any two or

more of these symptoms are indicative of cancer in the body. The human

population currently displays all these symptoms. Uncontrolled human population

growth will not necessarily destroy the earth, but civilization in its present form

could collapse as in the case of Easter Island.

Complete the following statements:

1) Scientists believe that world population can survive with _____________

2) A reasonable standard of living means availability of_________________.

3) Scientists compare population growth to a cancerous tumour as _______.

4) Easter Island came to an due to _________________________________.

5) The word which means the same as ‘probability’ in the passage is ______.

6) The antonym of ‘scarce’ is _____________________________________.
