Q1.Read the following passage and choose the correct answer. (5)
At last, I sat down exhausted and fell asleep. I had scarcely shut my eyes when a
great noise awakened me. Something had fallen beside me. It was a great piece
of fresh meat. I looked up and was astonished to see more meat fall at different
places.
I vaguely remembered something I had once heard from mariners about a valley of
diamonds long ago. They had talked about clever merchants who got the diamonds
out from the dangerously deep valley. The merchants, they said, stood on top and
threw fresh meat into the valley. The eagles, nesting with their young ones on the
trees on top of the mountains, would swoop down to pick up the meat. Some
diamonds would stick to these pieces of fresh moist meat. When the eagles came
back to their nest on top of the valley, they were driven away with sticks, and the
diamonds were taken off the meat by the merchants. Till now I had given up all
hope of leaving the valley alive. Now I was hopeful again.
I began to gather the largest diamonds that I could see, and put them into the
leather bag which I had used to carry my provisions. Afterwards , I took the
largest piece of meat I could find, tied it close round me with the cloth of my
turban and then laid myself face down upon the ground.
