1. Hundreds of years ago, two boys became orphans at a very early age. They were to young too cultivating land and grow paddy for themselves. As was customary among the Chakhesang Nagas, the two helpless brothers were fed by their relatives in rotation. When they grew up they felt rather ashamed of their helpless position of being dependent on their relatives. They, therefore, started thinking seriously as to how they could start living independently.
2. Ultimately, they decided to take to trapping animals and birds as a means of livelihood. With the help of the villagers, they constructed a small hut for themselves and started living separately there. Right from the beginning, they became successful trappers, catching enough for their sustenance. In the early stages of their independent living, most of the time they ate meat, maize and vegetables, but later they cooked rice, which they exchanged for their catch with their relatives, neighbors and friends. The catch included deer, porcupine and birds such as pheasants, quails and partridges. In this process, the two brothers grew independent and became inseparable from each other. They were not only brothers, but also friends.
3. After a few years of living in this manner, they noticed a peculiar phenomenon in which the heads of the trapped birds were occasionally missing. They could not understand why this happened. So they consulted some elders and were advised to change the location of their hunt. Accordingly, they shifted to some other forests and started trapping there. For some time, they were very happy, but the phenomenon of the missing heads recurred. The two brothers were puzzled
