Q1. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:-
Water puppetry, known as ‘Muaroinuoc,’ is one of the most beautiful folk arts of
Vietnam. The performance takes place on the local ponds, specially constructed ponds
or portable tanks. Up to eight puppeteers sit hidden behind a bamboo screen designed
like a temple and operate the colourful wooden puppets which are coated with lacquer
to keep them dry. The puppeteers control the puppets with the help of rods, strings,
rudders and pulleys attached to their base.
The pools serve as the stage. The water hides the moving mechanism so the audience
sees only the puppets.
The shows depict folk tales, legends, harvest and fishing stories and events from
national history and from day-to-day life. There are many characters, the most notable
being Chu Teu who is a jester and the narrator. An orchestra with vocals, drums,
wooden bells, gongs, bamboo flutes and horns provides the background music. The
puppeteers skilfully use the waves and splashes as well as shimmering lights to add
visual effects.
