1.According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs does the Patagonia culture meet? What would it be like to work at Patagonia? (Hint: Go to Patagonia’s website and find thesection on jobs.) What’s your assessment of the company’s work environment? (20points)There are 3 stages that the Patagonia’s culture meets according to Maslow’shierarchy, the physiological, security, and esteem. The physiological stage is met by theneed of food. Food met by the company’s café that “serves organic food and drinks”. Thesecurity stage is met by the need for shelter. The fourth stage of Maslow’s hierarchy iscalled Esteem. There is also a sense of esteem because these employees have a sense ofresponsibility of their own work that helps protect environment.I would imagine that Patagonia is very passionate about the health of theenvironment since their employees know “what they do each day is contributing toward ahigher purpose-protecting and preserving the areas” that they love the most which is theenvironment(Robbins & Coulter, 2013, p.531) “. If I wanted to be an export manager Iwould have to make sure that the company meets U.S customs regulation anddocumentation required for all export activities. I would oversee imports and exportsassociated with the business in Canada. I would be in charge of making improvements onshort and long term strategies (Patagonia Careers, 2015).My assessment of the company’s work environment is that Patagonia’s culturepromotes good ethical behavior for both employees and the company. Patagonia appealsto the basic needs of their employees, the need for feed, leisure activities with people, and

shelter. Patagonia also has a strong core value of trying to protect and preserve the healthof the environment. These employees are passionate of this belief and will try to do theirbest to contribute to a higher purpose.2.Use the expectancy theory or the equity theory of motivation to explain how feelingunderpaid might affect the work of a Patagonia associate and what a manager can do toincrease the employee's motivation. (20 points)The equity theory is “the theory that an employee compares her job’s input-outcomes ratio with that of relevant others and then corrects any inequity(Robbins &Coulter, 2013, p.515) “. If an employee felt underpaid at Patagonia then they can startviewing themselves as under rewarded. When this happens the employee will try toattempt to do something about it. The individual will start to compare their selves withsimilar individuals with the same job title and compare their pay. The feeling of beingunderpaid can affect an individual’s commitment to the company and result in quittingthe job. Managers can motivate employees by being honest and open about how decisionsare made and follow procedures. They can also do employee recognition programs orwage incentive plans. Mangers can set common goals so that the employees can feel likethey are a part of the practice and this will enhance performance (Warschaw)”. Managerscan also ask for feedback from employees to help the staff “feel respected and valued(Warschaw)”.
