Q1) Which of the following is TRUE? * SITUATION1 – BMI Body mass index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity. Based on the table given below, answer the following questions. a) If Height increases and Weight increases, BMI will increase. b) If Height increases and Weight decreases, BMI will decrease. c) If Height decreases and Weight remains same, BMI will decrease. d) If Height decreases and Weight decreases, BMI will decrease.

Body Mass Index

The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is expressed in units of  kg/m^2 ,

It can be shown mathematically as,

BMI=\frac{Weight( in\ kg)}{[Height(in\ m)]^2}

we can see from the expression that BMI is directly proportional to weight and inversely proportional to height.

So, analyzing the following cases,

  1. If Height increases and Weight increases, BMI will increase : TRUE (as      both numerator and denominator increases , so chances are that BMI will increase, depending on the rate of increase in fraction).
  2. If Height increases and Weight decreases, BMI will decrease : TRUE (denominator increases and numerator decreases, so BMI will decrease).
  3. If Height decreases and Weight remains same, BMI will decrease : FALSE (denominator decreases and numerator remains same, so BMI will increase).
  4. If Height decreases and Weight decreases, BMI will decrease : TRUE (as both numerator and denominator decreases , so chances are that BMI will decrease, depending on the rate of decrease in fraction).
