The soil is loosened before sowing of the seeds to allow the roots to penetrate deep into soil. This helps the roots to breathe. The loosened soil also helps in the growth of the earthworms and microbes in the soil which loosen the soil further and add humus to it. It also helps to release the nutrients held in dead organisms and makes them available for the plants. Loosening helps to bring the nutrient-rich soil to the top so that plants can use these nutrients.
