- b=omasum
- c=intestine
- d=abosmasum
- A - Reticulum
- B - Omasum
- C - Intestine
- D - Abomasum
Explanation:
Apart from humans, ruminants (herbivores) possess a unique digestive system that allows them to use better energy from fibrous plant materials. Their stomach consists of four chambers: Rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum.
Generally, as per their adaptation, these animals swallow plenty of grass without chewing much. The food is partially chewed and mixed with saliva. This partially digested food is sent to rumen (a large sac like structure). Here, the enzymes allows to perform partial digestion of food. And this partially digested food is called the cud, which is then pushed to the reticulum. In fact, the rumen and reticulum are closely associated.
While the animal is resting, the cud is brought back into the mouth in small quantities and it chews further. This is called rumination. After completely chewed, the food is sent back to other parts of stomach, i.e., omasum and abomasum and ultimately to intestine for complete digestion.
