a) Sclerenchyma cells are simple permanent tissues where cells lack protoplasm and are ‘dead at maturity’. The ‘cell walls’ of sclerenchyma are deposited with lignin and this gives them the thick grainy texture. These cells can be of different shapes and are mainly involved in provided structure and strength to plants.

b) Living element of xylem tissue is xylem parenchyma. They are usually “short, thin-walled, and have lignin deposits”. They are present surrounding the conducting system of the plants and assist the tubes and tracheids in water conduction. Thy also store food.
