Q13 The addition of numerator and denominator of a fraction is three less than twice the denominator. If the numerator and denominator are decreased by 1, the numerator becomes half the denominator. Find the fraction.​

Solution:

Let the numerator be x and denominator be y.

Therefore, fraction

 =  \frac{x}{y}

A/Q

x + y = 2y  -  3

or

x - y + 3 = 0 ...(i)

And,

x - 1 =  \frac{1}{2} (y - 1)

or

2x - y - 1 = 0...(ii)

Subtracting equation (1) from (2) , we get

x - 4 = 0

 =  > x = 4

From (i)

4 - y + 3 = 0

 =  > y = 7

Therefore, fraction

 =  \frac{x}{y}  =  \frac{4}{7}
