HELLO DEAR,

GIVEN:- a) convet n-butyl chloride to octane

b) Chlorobenzene to Bipheny.

SOLUTION:- a) Alkyl halides react with sodium in dry ether to give the hydrocarbon containing double the number of carbon atoms present in the halides. This reaction is called wurtz reaction.

2RX + 2Na ------dry ether------>. RR + 2NaX.

By using above information we can convert n- butyl chloride to octane.

2CH3CH2CH2CH2Cl + 2Na ------dry

(n- butly chloride). ether---------> CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3 + 2NaCl

(Octane)

b) when aryl halides react with sodium in presence of dry ether, two aryl groups are joined together and diphenyl is formed. This reaction is called fitting reaction.

I HOPE IT'S HELP YOU DEAR,

THANKS.
