The oxygen atom is in zero oxidation number state in:
(B) OZONE
- The oxidation no of oxygen in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is -1.
+1 × 2 + x × 2 = 0
⇒x = -2/2 = -1
- The oxidation no of oxygen in ozone (O3) is ZERO.
- The actual oxidation no of the three atoms in ozone is +1, -1 and 0.
- So, the average oxidation no = {+1 + (-1) + 0}/3 = 0
- The oxidation no of oxygen in water (H2O) is -2.
+1 × 2 + x = 0
⇒ x = -2
- The oxidation no of oxygen in oxygen difluoride (OF2) is +2.
x + 2 × (-1) = 0
⇒x = +2
