Q2. A positive number is 5 times another number. If 21 is added to both the
numbers, then one of the new numbers becomes twice the other new number.
What are the numbers?

Let the numbers be x, y

⟹ y = 5x

21 is added

The numbers are

y + 21 , x+21

According to question

y + 21 = 2(x+21)

5x + 21 = 2x + 42

5 x = 2x + 21

3x = 21

x = 7 ⟹ y = 35

Let the two numbers be x and y, x>y.

According to question,

x = 5y .....(I)

and x + 21 = 2(y + 21)

or, x + 21 = 2y + 42

or, 5y + 21 = 2y + 42 (using equation (I)

or, 5y - 2y = 42 - 21

or, 3y = 21

or, y = 21/3

or, y = 7.

Therefore, x = 5y = 5 × 7 = 35.

Hence, the numbers are 35 and 7.
