a) These lines are from the poem “Walrus and the Carpenter” written by the poet Lewis Carroll. The poem is very long, and it is called an unusual poem.
There are a conversation-based, verses between walrus and carpenter.
Walrus is a huge mammal found in the Arctic Ocean and one cannot understand why the poet has chosen these characters of walrus and carpenter. Nonetheless, in the poem, the moon is very unhappy while lighting the sky in the night.
We have always seen the smiling moon, but the poet pictures a sulky moon. The moon was 'shining sulkily' because the sun was shining even after it had turned dark and was night-time.
It was the moons turn to light the sky, but seeing the sunshine brightly made the moon sulk.
b) Personification.
The figure of speech includes simile, metaphor, oxymoron, the irony. Each of the figure of speech has varied expression.
Personification is a figure of speech where qualities of human beings are given to some ideas or non-living things. Example of personification is the flowers sang; the thunder rattled.
