The fall in the level of mercury in the inverted tube is due to the atmospheric pressure.

Explanation:

  • 1. The pressure which is exerted by the mercury is more than the atmospheric pressure to start as a result of this there is fall in the Mercury level in the test tube and the rise in the Mercury level in the the dish of Mercury.
  • 2. The level X in the figure is used to refer to the the height at wind by the  Mercury after the glass has been removed. It is used to calculate the normal atmospheric pressure in that area at that particular point of time.
  • 3.This arrangement is used to measure the the normal atmospheric pressure in an area.
