In Fig (a), we will observe a rapid evolution of hydrogen gas.

  • Reaction in setup 1 =

        Zn + 2 HCl -> ZnCl₂ + H₂

  • Zinc is more reactive than Hydrogen, hence it replaces H from its solution.
  • The presence of hydrogen gas can be detected by lightning a matchstick. In presence of hydrogen gas, it burns with a pop sound.
  • In setup b, c, and d, metals magnesium, copper and platinum react with dilute HCl respectively.
  • All these metals are incapable of reacting with acids to evolve hydrogen gas.
