à) Astronauts on the moon cannot hear each other directly because in the moon(or places excluding the earth)

there is only vaccum. We know that sound needs a medium for travelling.

b) As the sound waves propagates from one place to the other in air, the air itself is not required to move from one place to the other because there are small tiny particles in the atmosphere.We know that sound waves travels in both the three states.So these sound waves hits the small particles and this particles hits the other particle.Hence the sound reaches our ears.
