Given : [x+3] is one of the factors of x³ + 2x²-ax-18

To Find : Value of  a

(a) 3 (b) -3 (c) 9 (d) -9

Solution:

[x+3] is one of the factors of x³ + 2x²-ax-18

x + 3 = x - (-3)

if x - b  is a factor of p(x)

then p(b) = 0

b = - 3

p(x) =  x³ + 2x²-ax-18

p(-3)  = (-3)³ + 2(-3)² - a(-3) - 18  = 0

=> -27  + 18 + 3a - 18  = 0

=> 3a = 27

=> a = 9

Value of a = 9
