Q2. Rakesh took 28 grams of Nitrogen and 2 grams of hydrogen and reacted them together to form Ammonia. He also provided all the necessary conditions for the reaction to take place. Even after a long time Rakesh observed that all of the nitrogen and hydrogen did not get used up . What could be the reason for this *

a) It is so as it is a reversible reaction. The reaction proceeds in the forward and backward direction simultaneously.

b) It is so as nitrogen and hydrogen do not react with eachother.

c) None of the options are correct

Answer:

The reaction for the formation of ammonia is N

+3H

2

⇔2NH

3

.

1 mole (28 g) of nitrogen will react with 3 moles (6g) of hydrogen to form 2 moles (34g) of ammonia if the reaction is 100% completed.

But only 17 g of ammonia are actually formed.

Hence, the reaction is 50% complete.

Hence, 0.5 mole (14 g) of nitrogen and 3 moles (3g) of hydrogen will remain unreacted at equilibrium. Hence, option C is correct.
