Answer:
Morus is the scientific name of mulberry tree.
Answer:
The genus name for all mulberry trees is morus. However, there are quite a few types of mulberry trees (1). When looking for cultivars with good fruits there are four groups:
White mulberry (morus alba) which is native to Eastern parts of Asia (China). This is the sweetest of the mulberry fruits. The colors can range from white, pink, lavender and black.
Red mulberry (morus rubra) that is native to Eastern parts of North America. Cultivars from this are sweet but slightly balance with some tartness. The colors are dark red to black. These trees can hybridize with the white mulberry and I read somewhere that about half of wild mulberries in the United states are hybridized.
- Black mulberry (morus nigrathat) are native to central Asia like Iran, Pakistan, and India. The cultivars from these are considered the best. Sweet with acidity to balance out the sweetness. These mulberries cannot hybridize because they are polypliody meaning they have more than two sets of chromosomes.
Then you have the long mulberry (morus macroura) sometimes called the Himalayan, Tibet, or Pakistan mulberry. Also from the middle east in Asia. These are sweet fruits, not as cloyingly sweet as some white mulberries can get. They are about 2 to 3 inches long.
There are other types of mulberry groups that aren’t known for the fruit. See link below. But this gives you the four most common types of mulberries grown or cultivated.
