Let, a must be substracted.

From question, (3x-5)-a= 1

or, -a = 1-(3x-5)

or, -a = 1-3x+5

or, -a = -3x+6

or, -a = -(3x-6)

or, a = 3x-6

Thus, 3x-6 must be substracted.

Let the number to be subtracted be y

3x - 5 - y = 1

-y = 1 + 5 - 3x

-y = 6 - 3x

y = -6 + 3x

y = 3x - 6

No. to be subtracted is 3x - 6
