Answer:

This is wrong to say during Prabhupada's time there was no awareness of Krishna Consciousness in India. Srila Prabhupada's guru HDG Bhaktisiddhanta Swami had established many Gaudiya Mutt's across India. Also in Bengal and Odisha there were many signs of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's pastimes though in general people there were not much serious.

Now coming to the question why did Srila Prabhupada went to the West to preach. There are many reasons:

His guru Bhaktisiddhanta Swami had given him the instruction to preach the message of Lord Chaitanya to the English speaking world. So he had to go to fulfill his guru's desire. In fact Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also had predicted that a time will come when in each and every city and villages people would chant His name. Bhaktivinoda thakur also had expressed this wish in 1896, the same year when Srila Prabhupada appeared in this world.

Srila Prabhupada found most of the Indians were blindly following the West without knowing our own glories. So he though he thought of influencing the West so that we also automatically learn from them.

Consider this scenario: if you have to give some food to someone, whom will you give- a beggar or a well settled person? Obviously a beggar. Similarly when it comes to spiritual knowledge we should deliver that to someone who lacks it. That's why it was very important to preach this knowledge to the hippie, drug addicts, homosexual and other such people.
