The poem talks about the loss of association with nature as he grows up. He displays grief and despair over his loss of joy and vision that he found in the lap of nature.

Explanation:

Initially, Wordsworth talks about the despair and depression that he suffers after losing his poetic powers and employs platonic philosophy to look at the word in an infant way. He recalls the days when he spent his time in the bliss of heaven and aspires that those days come back. He feels that it was a personal weakness and a betrayal of nature to succumb to the mood and not helping him in overcoming that sorrow.

From stanza 5 onwards, he shifts from just describing his loss of vision, poetic abilities, and feeling of loneliness to elaborating that each individual undergoes this stage to be mature. He substitutes 'we' in place of 'I' to represent the entire humankind yet he could not stop himself from displaying his loss of 'visionary gleam' as he feels ignoring such a real thing would be dishonesty.

He admits that nature is beautiful and has assisted him in developing him but he is unable to accept the fact that he is now cut off from the beauty that he was born with(closeness to nature). He says that no matter how beautiful the earthly beauty may seem but it is always less perfect than the imperial and divine home where he has come from. He's not seen that world and thus, he cannot describe it more. This conflict is resolved by employing a set of analogies like 'an imperial home, a sea of eternity, absolute knowledge, etc.'
