Q23-A basket with 60 apples weighs 21 Kg 800 g. The same basket with 8 apples weighs 3

Kg 600 g. If each apple in the basket has the same weight, then :-
a) What is the weight of the empty basket?
b) What is the weight of the basket with 18 apples?

Lets assume weight of each apple as 'x' and the weight of empty basket as 'y'.

Also, 21kg 800 gm = 21800 gm && 8 kg 600 gm = 8600 gm

As per the given information

60x + y = 21800 --->I

8x + y = 8600 ----> II

Substracting II from I; gives you -

60x - 8x + y - y = 21800 - 8600

i.e. 52x = 13200

i.e. 8x = 1650

i.e. x = 253.84

a)

Substituting above in equation II gives...

8*253.84 + y = 8600

i.e. Weight of Empty Basket = y = 6569.23 gms = 6.57 Kg

b)

Weight of basket with 18 apples

= 8*253.84 + 6569.23

= 4569.23 + 6569.23

= 11138.46 gms

= 11.138 Kg
