Solution :

Let us assume that the speed of the boat in still water is x km/hr.

The speed of water in the river is 2 km/hr.

The water in the river is always flowing in the direction ; so, when the boat is moving downstream the speed of the stream of water will assist and in other cases it will resist .

So,

Speed of the boat downstream : (x+2) km/hr

Speed of the boat upstream : (x-2) km/hr

Let it move for a certain distance d in both the directions .

T_downstream = 5 hrs

T_Upstream = 6 hr

Speed = Distance/Time

Distance = Speed * Time = Constant

> (x+2)*5 = (x-2)*6

> 5x + 10 = 6x - 12

>x = 22

Thus, the speed of the boat in still water is 22 km/hr.

This is the required answer.
